Yankees fans, its beginning. On arguably the biggest stage Friday night at Fenway, Joba Chamberlain dominated the Red Sox and won a tight pitcher’s duel against Josh Beckett 1-0. His line was awesome…7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER,1 BB and 9 K. Beckett was pretty damn good, too…7 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 1BB and 6 K. Now I know that Manny was out of the lineup with a *wink, wink* knee injury and Big Papi just returned, but Joba still blew away some pretty good hitters. One thing the Sox fans will be steaming about was Marty Foster’s generous strike zone when Mariano Rivera was closing out the game. They should be. I would if it was the other way around. All that aside, is Kevin Youkilis’ head a magnet for the ball? It’s hard to believe that Joba would throw at him with a 2-0 count in a 1 run game, but I just don’t know. If I didn’t hate his whining ass so much, I’d say Youkilis had a right to be pissed. The only way this night could have been better would be if the Rays did their job and lost to KC. Oh well. The Yanks also pulled off a fantastic deal getting Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte for Ross Ohlendorf and 3 minor leaguers. Nady’s hitting .330 and is a solid fielder taking over in left. Marte will help an already great pen. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, people around the league are sick because NY gave up so little for these two. That’s 7 in a row since the break. Things are looking up. I promise not to focus only on this series this weekend, it just happens to be the first thing I saw when I woke up this evening.
No. 1: I can’t stand it when a sports “figure” lashes out when asked an uncomfortable question during a heavily covered press event. Yes, I’m talking about SubpoenaGate. The Great Pumpkin, aka Phil Fulmer, was asked if he had received a subpoena from the lawfirm of Blankenship, Harrelson & Wollitz when he arrived at the Wynfrey Hotel for SEC Media Days. Of course he said no and proceeded to say that these questions had no place at media day and it was all BS. Yep, he said BS. He also said that he would have some choice words if not for all the cameras present. Now I’m not saying it was right to basically throw an envelope at him as he was entering the hotel, but the press had every right to ask him about it. This is big SEC news for a few reasons. It drags both Fulmer and UT back into a nasty situation involving the Vols’ biggest rival, Alabama. He may have give a deposition two days before the Auburn game. Most importantly, it takes the emphasis off the team and puts it squarely on him. The Vol Nation can’t be happy.
No. 2: Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY is going to sign Barry Bonds. Not the Yankees or anybody else. He hasn’t played for months, is a defensive and base running liability and has the worst stigma attached to an MLB player since the Black Sox scandal. I wish he would just go away. It’s been a pretty special season so far with the Cubs, White Sox and Rays in 1st place. But his name puts a bit of a damper on it as the trade deadline approaches. Not much, just a little.
So, here we go. This is my first ever post for Boomstick Sports and I’m drawing a blank on what I want to write. Oh yeah, my brother and I have decided, at the urging of my wife, to start a sports blog. She thinks we know an awful lot about the subject and should share our “vast knowledge” with the world. Right. Anyway, we thought that maybe we could inspire a few heated debates and add to our list of enemies. We’re calling it Boomstick Sports due to our love of a certain movie annnnd its about sports. I’m interested to find out if anyone can name this movie. I figure plenty of people can. I know I’m not that clever. We, my brother Matt and I, want to cover any and all sports people want to talk, bitch or rant about. We’re huge Georgia Bulldogs fans, as well as the Yankees, Celtics, NY Giants and Rangers. Matt likes the Titans, too. I’m still trying to figure that out. So all you Gator, Red Sox and Laker fans are welcome to HATE! Hopefully people will find us and help broaden our horizons. Here’s a little reminder to all you Laker fans, in case you forgot who the champs are…
Most of the conference football Media Days are wrapping up, so I plan on commenting on them a little. Once again its a Yankees/Red Sox weekend and since I live in Georgia I’ll get the Braves game instead of the real one on Fox. I need to get MLB Extra Innings. At least I can watch Sunday night on ESPN. More to come.
